Julianastraat 34, Wageningen, the story of Henk Slotboom

ln their little house on the Julianastraat, the parents of
Henk offer shelter to several Jewish families:
" The Maarssen family
* The Van Creveld family (pictured after the war, Leo is on
the left)
* The Rubens family
* The Tannenbaum family
" The Weinreb family
ïhose in hiding are given 'nicknames'. Leo van Creveld is called Jan Pap and Ruth Maarssen is Yvonne during the war.

Henk is in his bed when he is awoken by a huge blast, and shards of glass in his bed, people shouting and screaming. He thinks he's going to die. lt's lt/arch 26,1943, and a big  bomb has fallen on het Roode Dorp, also in the
Julianastraat. lmmediately after the explosion, Henk's house is full of neighbours. They are afraid and talk busily with each other. Nobody looks at the corner where Henk is sitting. He is afraid as well.

The war damage in the Roode Dorp is huge. Because thechance of another bombing increases, the people buriedshelters. Sometimes there is an exercise alarm. Then Henk must quickly go to the shelter. Everyone gets the advice to cover their heads. Henk thinks it is funny in a way, all those people with a pan or a jar on their heads.

ln 1943 two 2O-year-old uncles of Henk from Opheusden received a call for the Arbeitseinsatz: Piet van de Sluis and Henk Peters (pictures from after the war). They hide at the house of the Slotboom family. The boys are bored. They make up jokes, and pull pranks mostly aimed at Henk Slotboom's mother. Piet and Henk stretch an old-fashioned sticky flycatcher around the toilet bowl and they fire an air gun at her back. For that last action they hear from a reliable source about a bloodshed as big as a Dutch guilder. Which they regret.

The last years of the war, the Germans are increasingly on the defence" The Tommies (British)aircraft bombard Germany and German targets in the Netherlands. There is a regular exercise alarm. At school, Henk has to dive
under the tables with his classmates. Henk is especially afraid when the alarm sounds at night. On September 17, 1944, Henk hears noises of aircraft and
the noise is getting closer. He has never seen so many airplanes together. Henk is used to flying dots in the sky, but these are big low-flying monsters. Then people are falling out. Not a few, but thousands of people fall out of the air!
