It's an air landing. There is one at the Ginkelse heide (photo: Henk Slotboom after the war at the memorial of the air landing on the Ginkelse heath) and one at the
Doorwerthse heath. Henk thinks that liberation is near. But that's not true, the landings fail and the Germans are still here.

lmmediately after the air landings, the Wageningers have to evacuate their homes on German demand. That feels like a hangover, but Henk is used to adapting to new situations. He grew up in the war and did not know better He also finds it a great exciting adventure with ever-new experiences.

The family of Henk is housed in 1944 and 1945 by four families in Bennekom, de Kraats and in Wekerom. At all addresses it is crowded. The family departs on their bikes, with some spare clothes and blankets on the back. lt's dangerous on the road, there are often bombardments. Along the Dijkgraaf are the remains of a crashed plane. At farmer Borre in Bennekom there are many evacuees.
The youngsters explore the area during the daytime. Henk sees lackless Russian prisoners of war working on a defensive line of trenches. The Germans are annoying them. Occasionally, the hungry bunch of Russians gets a peel and a bunch of bread.

Henk often goes to a colossal bull, which is in a stable farmer Borre's. He sits on his new friend and is sitting close to his head. When the farmer sees it he becomes
very angry. Henk does not understand why. At the end of October 1944, the evacuees had to leave Bennekom. Henk's family finds shelter in the house of
farmer lt/aas in Wekerom (photo).

When the AIIied Forces advance, the Germans pull back. They go to all farms to search for bicycles, so they can get away faster. Henk's mother has a spare bike in a rcar shed. Henk has to save this bike: by hiding it in a pasture. He picks up the bike and runs away with it. Then he walks straight into the arms of a group of Germans. They take the bicycle. Henk feels humiliated. Bike gone, fool!
