A week later, the allies (they are the foreign forces who fight against the Germans) lose the battle around Arnhem. So the liberators are close, but they are not yet winning.

Wageningen is located near the front, where the armies are fighting. We have to evacuate again, but not that far this time. Together with grandma and grandpa, a pig and two cows we go and live with Aunt Tonia and Uncle Anton, at the Blokkenweg in Ede.

Then all men are ordered to go and work for the Germans. Daddy refuses and he is captured. But he escapes from the camp Mooi-Land in Doorwerth! He flees in the dark through the woods. The Germans patrol the woods and there are landmines and dead soldiers. In the middle of the night he comes home. We are so happy!
In the winter of 1944-1945 it is very cold. Coal for the stove is no longer available. With uncle Anton and daddy I cut a tree. That is not allowed by the Germans and I must admit I'm a little scared.

ORDER.
………
The daily allowance consists of good food,
smoking articles and five guilders.
The remaining relatives will be
taken good care of.
All inhabitants of the town are forbidden
to leave their town.
Those who attempt to flee or
to resist, will be shot.

There is less and less to eat. The pig and cow have already been slaughtered. The bread we can get hold of tastes like rotten oak leaves. Mum is very brave, she
steals swede and potatoes from the Germans. That is very dangerous, she can get shot if caught. She doesn’t even tell daddy.
